A reasonable starting point: the contents of a one- or two-bedroom apartment can often fit when furniture is disassembled and boxes are packed consistently. Treat that as an estimate, not a promise.
Items that commonly fit
- A queen mattress and bed frame
- A sofa or compact sectional
- A dining table with chairs
- Dressers, nightstands, and bookshelves
- Major appliances, where facility rules allow them
- Dozens of medium moving boxes
Why the same unit fits different amounts
Uniform boxes can stack safely. Irregular furniture, fragile surfaces, upholstered items, and anything you need to retrieve later consume more practical space. A narrow door or difficult hallway can also prevent a large item from entering even when the floor plan has room.
A simple loading order
- Place heavy, rarely needed furniture and appliances at the back.
- Create stable box columns with the heaviest cartons at the bottom.
- Keep a narrow center aisle if you will visit the unit.
- Place documents, seasonal items, and frequently used boxes near the front.
- Do not lean heavy items where they can shift toward the door.
Measure these four things
Record the largest item’s width, height, and depth. Then confirm the unit door opening, elevator opening, and tightest hallway turn. Ask whether the listed unit size is nominal or measured internally.
